Chinese Year of the Black Water DragonChinese New Year was ushered in on 23 January with the first day of the Chinese astrological year beginning on 4 February.

This is the year of the Black Water Dragon and I share with you information and exercises from two respected teachers to help you make the most of this auspicious year.

Five things about dragons you may not know – Roger Hamilton

Gong Xi Fa Cai! We’re now in the Chinese Year of the Water Dragon. Whether you follow the Chinese Zodiac or not, here are 5 things about dragons worth knowing in 2012.

DREAMS TO REALITY - The dragon is the ONLY mythical animal on the chinese zodiac. It is the link between the imaginary world and the real world and has a special place in Chinese culture (In the same way you cannot deface a US flag in America, you cannot deface a dragon image in China).

  • In 2012, what is the one dream you will bring into reality? Pin it up with a dragon image.

THE SYMBOL OF FLOW –  The dragon symbolises the protector of flow, and in Chinese myths is always controlling the waters, floods, seas and rivers. Its three joints represent the trinity of flow (creation, preservation, destruction).

  • In 2012, what will you begin, what will you preserve, and what will you end to stay in flow?

THE POWER OF NINE - The dragon is related to the number 9, the highest single digit number and Chinese symbol of celestial power. The chinese dragon has 81 Yang scales (9×9) and 36 Yin scales (9×4). Nine dragons was the symbol of the Chinese Emperor (and if you have ever been to Hong Kong, ‘Kowloon’ means ‘nine dragons’ in Chinese). The chinese character for ‘nine’ is the same as the word ‘forever’.

  • In 2012, what part of you will you develop – a skill or quality that will lift you higher, and be with you forever?

THE CELESTIAL MESSENGER - The dragon has spread through all cultures, and today are found in everything from Shrek to Harry Potter. The English word comes from the Greek ‘‘drakan” which means ‘water dragon’, derived from ‘drakein’ which means ‘to see more clearly’. Up to modern time, the dragon is seen as carrying a secret or message that it protects and passes to the select few.

  • In 2012, what dragon will you seek out. In what area do you want to ‘see more clearly’?

A SIGN OF THE TIMES - 2012 is the year of the Water Dragon, which only comes around every 60 years. The last Water Dragon year was 1952 (the first year to see a return-flight of a passenger plane across the Atlantic), and before that was 1892 (The year Edison got a patent for a two-way telegraph. It was also the year of the first basketball game).

  • In 2012, what will you invent? What will you create that will leave a legacy?

Where to start with these five questions?

Grab a blank sheet and start with that – a white space of unexplored, virgin territory: the kind that old map makers would leave blank on their maps because no one had been there yet; the spaces on the map where there were no coastlines or land masses; just empty space with the words “Here be dragons.”

Gong Xi Fa Cai. Wishing you a prosperous lunar new year!

Suggested ritual for 2012 – Davina Mackail Year of the Black Water Dragon

Well we’ve made it to 2012 – what a gloriously exciting time to be alive! Yes, really. I know it may not seem like that with all the current doom and gloom. But this truly is the beginning of a transformational epoch in human history.

We are entering a new golden age, a renaissance of human consciousness, an opportunity to raise our game as human beings, to understand our true nature and realise our passion and potential both individually and collectively.

Ushered in with the first new moon in Aquarius accompanied by the Chinese New Year of the Black, Water Dragon. 2012 is also a 5 year. With that line-up transformation is guaranteed.

This is the pivotal year of the new millennium. A time of make or break. To harness the luck of that mythical dragon and increase your personal flow this is a year to go beyond your known boundaries. A year to dream BIG dreams, get inventive, be adventurous, develop the courage of your heart and go for gold! It’s a time for boldness in following the wisdom of your own inner knowing. Truly the time of being your own authority has arrived.

MANIFEST YOUR INTENTIONS

Between now and the full moon on 7 February is a great time to manifest your intentions for the year.

It’s great to set your big goals and dreams in motion. But I’d like you to focus on something else as well. Something far more important to your daily flow of peace and joy and something that is far more likely to help you ultimately achieve your big dreams. That something is “What you LOVE to do”.

It’s extraordinary how often we ignore this even when we think we’re actually doing it. Often we’re so focussed on our big dream we forget our daily happiness.

CONNECT WITH WHAT YOU LOVE

To connect with what you LOVE find a time when you’ll be undisturbed and sit with yourself. Spend a few minutes just relaxing. Take a breath in above your head and exhale below your feet and repeat a few times.

Now, with your non-dominant hand resting on your heart to remind you of where this information is coming from ask yourself “What do I really LOVE?” and keep asking yourself until you can tune in to that energy and get the flow going. Relax and allow time for this exercise.

If you’ve been really out of touch with yourself lately it’ll take a while for you to remember what you really love – not what you think you should love or achieve or have but what you REALLY LOVE deep down in your soul.

To give you an idea, some of the things I truly LOVE in life are walking in the woods; playing my drum; my morning cappuccino especially if my husband goes to get it for me:); afternoons curled up reading a novel; going to the cinema; catching up with good friends; rainbows; hugging trees; dancing by myself; making up silly songs whilst driving; long, indulgent bubble baths…etc etc

Once you unleash your soul they’ll be no stopping you. You’ll also discover that what your soul loves rarely costs much money so this is a gift you can truly afford. Capture all your deep loves in a notebook and promise yourself that 2012 will be the year you give yourself the pleasure of something you truly love every single day.

I wish you all a truly joyful and courageous 2012

With infinite love and blessings from a wood dragon!

Is all this technology really a good thing?

January 21, 2012 by

For those of us with an interest in personal development, there are so many more ways we can now access information. In the past year, most of the well known names launched internet TV stations, or began offering ‘live streaming’ from their workshops. This, combined with telesummits, webinars and online courses; e-books, apps and downloads mean many more people are able to participate and benefit from their messages than ever before.

So whether 2012 heralds the end of the world, or “a new golden era for humanity” you can be sure many more of us will be informed, awake, aware and ready for it!

But is all this technology a good thing? I like to think so, but not everyone’s convinced.

Boring recluses?

If, as I do, you spend a considerable portion of each day on line, surfing for work or for pleasure, it’s likely you come in for a fair amount of flack from non surfer friends who can’t understand the attraction and suggest we are boring recluses with a very sorry social life.

In my experience, nothing could be further from the truth. This week for instance, it was a treat to be invited via Twitter by a former work colleague to an event in my home city.

“Come to #bettakultcha”, said Pete. “To what?” I tweeted back… and a whole new experience opened up.

Passion not pitches

Horrible name, great idea – Bettakultcha features anyone who wants to have a go speaking about their passion, on stage in front of an audience, for five minutes over 15 slides. No selling, no pitches.

So off we went to a place I’d never been before, to meet people I’d never met before, to experience an event I’d never even heard of before this week.

And there you have a summary of all that’s great about new technology.   A group of people, some of whom had met online, were introduced to each other in person and enjoyed an evening’s live entertainment in a local venue we were previously unaware of, all thanks to Twitter (and Pete, of course).

During the evening, we chatted about our work and interests, discovered most of us worked from home online, found we liked each other’s company and vowed to meet up in the future for other occasions – the ‘clandestine cake club’ and ‘secret supper club’ are looking most appealing, though I’ll probably give the knitting a miss!

Musical saws

The bettakultcha presenters were local people with passions as diverse as creating delicious food from local ingredients on a camping stove, extreme photography, volunteering, the London riots, punctuation (a particular favourite of mine!), speed dating and musical saws – yes, musical saws (the single metal blade variety more usually found cutting wood) – you can play them with a bow!

What an interesting, fun evening.

In my experience, our lives are not only impacted by but improved in a myriad of ways through technology. We can choose to be fearful, disdainful or dismissive. Or we can choose to be open to the new people and new experiences it brings our way.

Just say yes

This week’s experience has reminded me to say yes to new opportunities, even if at first glance I’m not entirely sure I’ll enjoy them. Saying ‘yes’ to life, joining in and contributing is surely all part of our personal development?

What do you think? I’d love you to leave me a comment.

(Oh, and whilst we’re on the subject of technology, if you’re in Leeds or anywhere north of England with an interest in personal development, please tweet, facebook, email and tell your friends about Barefoot Doctor in Leeds – talk and workshop 17-18 February – thank you!)

Love Changes Everything

Robert Holden and Nick Davis hold their annual A Course in Miracles (ACIM) workshop, ‘Love Changes Everything’. on Saturday 4 February in London, with online streaming for those unable to attend the live event.

The workshop focuses on 12 aspects of Love that can be expressed in the world, practices which keep us in touch with Source and enhance the awakening of those whose lives we touch.

A Course in Miracles is an inward journey back to who we truly are. Once that journey has been made, a reawakening occurs and the Love that we are now aware of transforms everything we previously saw in the world into a vision of Love. Yet, when we have awakened to Love, which is enlightenment, what on earth are we going to do?

Nick and Robert address this and combine to bring ACIM practices to life with practical teachings on how Love Changes Everything.

The workshop costs £75, with lunch by donation. Online live streaming between 9.45am to 5.00 pm UK time costs £38. For further information and booking details visit:

Learn from the best – creative workshops with Jamie Catto

Jamie CattoLots of people offer workshops to help you unlock your creative potential – few of them draw on a career that has touched millions across the globe through music, film and philosophy.

Jamie Catto was a founder member of the multi-million-selling, dance music super group Faithless who went on to create, produce and direct the multi-award winning 1 Giant Leap films and albums.

What About You?

He has now turned his attention to helping you get what’s inside, out, leading ‘What About You?’ workshops from January to July in England, Holland, Thailand, Mallorca and Greece.

So if you want to kickstart a creative project, this is a real chance to learn from a true expert. These two day workshops involve techniques, processes and discussions evolved from Jamie’s 20 years of experience.

What About You? is for you if you’re prepared to “be here, present, vulnerable and authentic”, show up in all your “raw glory” and be willing to “really express what’s going on in the chaos and the shadows”. The workshops will help you:

• Connect yourself fully to your wholeness and reawaken your playful and inspired genius

• Dissolve and release negative beliefs and patterns that have limited you or stood in your way

Jamie explains more about the workshops on his website, where you can also book your place at any of the different locations:

http://jamiecatto.com/

What About Me?

If you’re not familiar with his work, Jamie’s most recent film ‘What About Me?’ is highly recommended. The visionary project took Jamie and fellow film maker Duncan Bridgeman to over 50 locations across five continents, exploring through music the complexities of human nature on a global scale. The film aimed to reveal how we are all connected through our creativity and beliefs – and through our collective insanity.

Covering universal topics such as God, sex, death and money, What About Me? features a diverse range of collaborators from Noam Chomsky to Will Young, Maxi Jazz to Tim Robbins, Michael Stipe to Billy Connolly, Eckhart Tolle to Baaba Maal, among many others – Susan Sarendon, Neale Donald Walsch, Marianne Williamson, KD Laing – the list goes on.

I simply can’t recommend the film highly enough. Find out more here:

New F**k It website & retreats

Fuck It RetreatsF**k It author John Parkin and his wife Gaia Pollini have said F**k it to running their award winning Hill that Breathes retreat centre in Italy and embarked on a new adventure.

The whole F**k It thing began when Gaia and John began teaching F**k It Weeks at The Hill seven years ago, but they’ve now decided they prefer to be spreading the F**k It message around the world than running a retreat centre in just one place.

Whilst The Hill will remain home to the couple and their kids, it’s now closed to visitors and F**K IT RETREATS has been born instead. This will see John and Gaia teaching F**k It weeks, and other great stuff, in amazing venues … on a volcano (yes, you read that right), in a luxury country estate and spa, and more.

The retreats will mainly be held in Italy and the UK for 2012, but there are plans for other venues later.

If you feel like learning or revisiting how to say F**k It (it’s the ultimate spiritual way) with John and Gaia, check out their new website, featuring a cute video of their young boys talking about F**k It (or ‘Fooook It’ as they call it in their Italian accents):

Explore the messages of CWG

The retreat is hosted by the Conversations with God Foundation and facilitated personally by Neale. It gives you the opportunity to explore the deepest messages of the Conversations with God books and the most important understandings of a dialogue that has shifted the reality of human beings around the world.

You look at your present moment to determine just how life is for you right now and look to the future with hopeful eyes and a joyful heart, sure and certain in the knowledge of what a loving and caring universe and a constantly blessing God has in store for you in the twelve months ahead – your best year yet.

Neale and his wife, Em, join with CWG readers from around the world to share together the spiritual journey and the spiritual opportunity which Conversations with God opens for all of us.

What to expect

This retreat is empowering and often life changing. Expect to be challenged – though the amount to which you participate is quite up to you. When I attended a few years ago, I saw people addressing issues as difficult as addiction, abuse and bereavement, as well as self image and deeply held, damaging beliefs. It’s wonderful to watch how Neale helps people with such issues to truly turn their thinking and their life around.

You will meet new friends of like mind and maybe renew acquaintances, ahead of a lovely New Year’s celebration. Due to their work with people dealing with addictions various, the event is usually held in an alcohol free location, so be aware of that if you’re more used to a boozy New Year!

Jerry Hicks & Gill Edwards – inspirational words on two sad losses

November 25, 2011 by

The personal development and spiritual community has felt the sadness of loss this week with the passing of Jerry Hicks and Gill Edwards on opposite sides of the pond within just a few hours of each other.

Esther Hicks has written touchingly about her husband Jerry ‘cutting out early’ on her. He will also be much missed by anyone who has loved Esther and Jerry’s Abraham books and workshops. Their teachings were the original source material for the Law of Attraction wave that swept the world and became inspiration for the thousands of books, films, essays and lectures supporting the current paradigm shift in consciousness.

Read Esther’s words on Jerry’s passing here

Those teachings of Abraham which Jerry co-authored were a huge influence on UK author Gill Edwards, best known for her work on ‘Living Magically’. Neale Donald Walsch, author of Conversations with God and a great friend of both Esther and Jerry and Gill, said of Gill’s work: “Gill Edwards has a special gift, a unique treasure, to offer humanity, and my soul sings its thanks to her every time I read a page of her writing.”

Gill used such moving words to console others facing bereavement that those closest to her have adapted them to her passing.

Read Gill’s thoughts on death here

And if you’re feeling sad, and want to focus on living magically, then check out

Gill’s Ten Invitations, taken from her book ‘Life is a Gift’

As we approach winter’s chill and Christmas, I hope all of the above brings you comfort and joy.

Love, God & The Art of French CookingMusician and author James Twyman and his co-author, French chef Roger Dufau are offering some rather interesting incentives for downloading the first three chapters of their new book ‘Love, God and The Art Of French Cooking’.

The book explores how the simple act of sharing a meal can change your life, since spiritual mastery is often achieved through our most ordinary experiences. It is based on James’ experience on meeting Roger, the owner of a small bed and breakfast outside Toronto, who dishes out lessons on love and God as easily as he does the most delicious cuisine.

Win a weekend for two

Download the first three chapters and you will have the opportunity to win a weekend for two at Roger’s‘Drew House’ in the village of Elora, where he also runs cookery classes. The area is well-known for its rich cultural heritage and natural beauty as Elora lies along the Grand River, with its picturesque gorge and hiking trails,fly-fishing, canoeing and kayaking.

As well as being entered into the draw for the free weekend, download the first three chapters of Love and the Art of French Cooking and you will also receive three video lessons with Roger sharing some of his favorite recipes plus a live video chat with James and Roger.

Sharing & spiritual mastery

In the book you’ll discover Roger’s philosophy for increasing joy in your life and how love can turn an ordinary meal into an extraordinary experience. You’ll find out why James and Roger believe our lives need to be crushed like garlic and why one of the most famous chefs in Paris would choose fried eggs as his last meal on earth.

Well worth a read I’d say. Head here to get to the sneak preview

Barefoot Satsang – bringing on the miracle

November 7, 2011 by
Filed under latest news & views, listen, mindset

Barefoot SatsangBarefoot Doctor Stephen Russell invites you to join a global reflection and meditation with his latest series of Barefoot Satsangs.

The six week series from 13 November to 18 December 2011 is entitled ‘Bring on the Miracle’, during which he’ll discuss:

  • What is a miracle – is it the same as a quantum leap?
  • Can you bring a miracle on or does it just happen?
  • What will a miracle do for you?
  • Doing a miracle for another person
  • Doing a miracle for humanity
  • Doing a miracle for the whole universe

Attend live and/or receive a single session recording for just $10, or purchase the full series of six for $50 at www.barefootsatsang.com

What is a satsang?

Satsang is an ancient tradition of meditating together for succour and courage – “It’s a Sanskrit word meaning sitting together in truth,” says Doc.

“The idea for an online satsang came to me a few months ago, whence all the good ones hail – that mad muse, along with clear instruction to focus on bringing people together at this time, to sit together in truth, in authentic communion with each other and that ineffable presence informing us all – that it’s important for this time and phase in light of the unprecedented challenge we face in terms of our very survival on the planet.”

Live & improvised

Barefoot Satsangs are usually held at 1700 UK time (GMT) every Sunday so people in as many time zones as possible can join in and benefit.  Each satsang lasts about an hour and is totally unique, live and interactive. Doc will be: “improvising according to the energy in the room – to keep it fresh and real every time, rather than formulaic and dull.”

The first 20 minutes comprises Doc’s reflections on the world this week, before a 20-30 minute guided meditation and a 20 minute question and answer session, when he answers questions from participants.

He says: “The more of us who participate, who sit together in truth meditating (the literal meaning of satsang), the more powerful the effect will be for everyone, not just the people there but everyone they know, everyone they know and so on, six times till the magic touches everyone on the planet.”

 Benefits

This is the fourth Barefoot Satsang series and Doc is thrilled at how people are benefiting from the experience.  Here’s a few of their comments:

“Beautiful, moving, loving, what a wonderful experience,” said Hils

“I absolutely LOVED it!” Lisa said, “It was lovely to feel connected even though I was sitting in my little chair on my ownsome.”

And Nadia explains: “I thought it was an important event, meditating together all over the world. I was also pleased that the answer to someone else’s existential question exactly answered my own. Thank you all.”

Whilst Stefanie enthused: “Thanks for this awesome webinar satsang! I loved it and will recommend it to everyone I know!” and Julia said: “Wonderful and so powerrrful! Just on a physical level I have lost aches etc but on  energetic levels can feel transformations taking place. A deep feeling of balance and contentment is manifesting.”

Liz sums up many participants’ thoughts: “Heartfelt Thanks for this evening’s Barefoot Satsang, I have no words at present except to say…… your energy is Beautiful and gently powerful.”

Affordable

Each Barefoot Satsang is extremely affordable at just $10 (that’s about £6 or 7 Euros) – or you can book the full series of six for $50, saving $10.  For more information and to register and submit questions for Doc, visit www.barefootsatsang.com

Matt Furey – Master of his art

October 24, 2011 by
Filed under latest news & views, mindset, read

“Practice is just as important as competition. Losses are as crucial to our development as victories. Mistakes lead to success. And life can still be exhilarating after you’ve climbed the highest mountain in the world.” Matt Furey

Matt Furey signing his new book 'Expect to Win, Hate to Lose'It can take the internationally renowned artist David Hockney (one of the most influential British artists of the twentieth century) just two and a half hours to paint a canvas that later graces art galleries around the world and would fetch hundreds of thousands were it to be offered for sale.

It’s not just the urge to return into the warm from the freezing cold weather of a winter’s day in the Wolds of Yorkshire that means David can transform an oblong of white into an evocative pictorial representation of the scene in front of him in just those two and a half hours. Nor is it simply the desire to capture the scudding clouds, changing light and fleeting sun across a landscape before rain or sleet sets in.

His ‘eye’ for a subject has been honed through years of observation, so he identifies a location with ease. His brushwork is assured through thousands of hours of practice; likewise his ability to select and blend colour.

So the landscape unfurls and unfolds across the canvas as Hockney (in his element despite the cold) structures and shades trees and clouds and hedges, immersed in the creative process. Then it’s done and he can head back into the warmth. Another day, another painting.

Setting up an environment for success

Like anyone at the top of their game, Hockney makes it look easy in the aptly named documentary ‘A Bigger Picture’, which follows him as he works. It looks easy today because of all the painstaking practice which went before, coupled with passion, self-belief and training.

Why is this important to note? Because since the film ‘The Secret’ many people have been lulled into a belief that they merely have to intend an outcome and the Law of Attraction will swing into effect to bring their desired result.

Whilst intent – expectation – is of course extremely important, so too is disciplined practice – and that holds just as true for those seeking personal growth as it does for budding artists, musicians, business or sports people. Matt Furey in his latest book ‘Expect to Win, Hate to Lose‘, would say it’s about setting up an environment for success: “Regardless of a person’s environment or talent, if you set up a success environment in your own mind, you can overcome seemingly insurmountable obstacles”.

Champion

Furey should know. A former US national wrestling and world kung fu champion from Iowa , he achieved success at an early age, winning titles in his chosen sports of swimming and wrestling throughout his years at school and college. At the pinnacle of his prowess, he was a US national wrestling champion and became the first non-Chinese to take the world title in the ancient Chinese grappling art of Shuai-Chiao – the oldest style of kung fu.

Since then, he’s devoted his time to teaching people not just the physical disciplines which helped him achieve his titles, but the inner game of martial arts.

It’s those inner martial arts – mental skills – which he believes have been central to his success – both in sport and as an entrepreneur dedicated to helping other people get in shape, lose weight , improve their flexibility and create radiant health and abundance in all areas of their life.

Practice

Matt Furey looks like a wrestler – someone you certainly wouldn’t want to mess with. And yet his energy is gentle, his smile ready and his demeanour encouraging rather than threatening. But when it comes to helping you achieve success – and his book will give you “62 golden nuggets for under and over-achievers who want even more out of life”, he’s adamant that the buck stops with you:

“The bottom line is that you have no right to expect success if you do nothing to bring it about. You need to practice. A LOT. You imagine what you want, you see yourself excited about achieving what you want, then you make a vow to do WHATEVER it takes to make it happen. This is true in sports, in fitness, in business and in everything else….”

He’s not big on cry babies either!

“Fear, frustration and impatience are not part of the success process. Get over them. Challenge your mind to be free of the negative clutter that keeps your life in neutral. Do what champions do: when success eludes them, they focus more – not less. They recommit. They get tough.”

Irreverent

The blurb for Furey’s book ‘Expect to Win, Hate to Lose’, describes it, in a flurry of capital letters, as an: “Outlandish, Irreverent, Non-Sugar Coated Success Book Written by a World Champion Martial Artist and Entrepreneurial Genius Reveals Everything You Always Wanted to Know About Creating the Life of Your Dreams – But Never Learned Before Because You Were Surrounded By People Who Didn’t Know Either!”

And he has a point. Whether you are seeking to master art, business, a sport, help your kids, or pursue your own personal development, you only have to google your chosen subject and you will find a whole plethora of ‘experts’ willing to sell you their knowledge for a fee – sometimes small, sometimes eye wateringly huge.

That makes the cover price of $24.95 for Matt’s book an absolute bargain because here you truly are learning from a master of their art.

Advice & common sense

Matt’s book shares learnings from his Chinese mentors and the US coaches whose inner game helped shape his own success. From the Olympic gold medalist’s advice on mastering one move, to working through pain – physical or mental in your quest for success, effective visualization and the attitude of gratitude, there’s a whole range of techniques that everyone can use, whatever their goals in life.

You’ll learn the importance of centering and grounding in your body, to ensure mind and body work seamlessly together. And if you tend to give up on projects too soon or give in to self doubt, there are tips for perseverance and slaying your demons.

This is very much a book that men will enjoy – particularly dads as there’s some great advice to pass on to your kids – but I’m a woman and found it difficult to put down as it’s such a good and interesting read. It’s a page turner as they say, so don’t worry if wrestling and martial arts are really not your thing, this book is about self growth and it’s packed with simple tips, good advice and a lot of common sense.

I don’t know if the cover fee will go towards it, but check out the picture on page 117 – it’s a school Matt’s money has built in China. He’s given back to the country that taught him the inner game of mastery and 500 pupils now benefit from an education at his Hope School that they would not otherwise have received.

Matt is a true Master of his art and shares his secrets to success very generously. Highly recommended.
